Goose Down vs. Microgel Fill: What Is the Difference?
Goose down and microgel are the two fills Flufié uses. Our down boots are filled with responsibly sourced goose down and keep feet warm down to -22°F. Microgel is the fill we use in our bags and scarves, chosen because it is the fill material that comes closest to the feel of goose down. Some mini boots use a blend of the two.
What is goose down fill?
Goose down is the soft layer of fine fibers that sits under a goose's outer feathers. It holds warm air in small pockets, so it insulates well while staying light. That is why we use it in our boots: it keeps feet warm without the weight of a traditional winter boot. Flufié boots use responsibly sourced goose down, quilted into a water-repellent shell.
What is microgel fill?
Microgel is a soft fill material that is the closest in feel to goose down. It gives our bags and scarves the same full, puffy look and soft hand as our boots. When you hold a Flufié bag or wear one of our scarves, it should feel familiar if you already own our boots.
Where does Flufié use each fill?
- Down boots: goose down, in the Classic, Metallic, Shiny, Cord, Macaron and Wild series.
- Mini boots: a blend of goose down and microgel in some models. Check the details on each product page.
- Bags: microgel.
- Scarves: microgel.
Which one is warmer?
The -22°F warmth rating applies to our goose down boots. That is the product built for the coldest days, and down is the fill we rely on for it. If warmth for your feet is the main goal, choose a down boot.
How do I choose?
Choose by what you need the product to do. If you want warm feet on very cold days, look at our down boots. If you want the same soft, quilted look in something you carry or wrap around your neck, our bags and scarves are filled with microgel. Because the two fills look and feel alike, the pieces pair well together.
Do they need different care?
The basics are the same. Wipe with a damp cloth, do not machine wash, dry at room temperature, and keep away from radiators, direct sunlight and harsh chemicals. Our guide on how to care for down boots covers the details.
